John Holland to deliver Mernda Rail Extension

John Holland has been awarded the contract to construct the Mernda Rail Extension project, which has a total value of nearly $600m.

The project will extend the South Morang line to Mernda, including:

  • Approximately 8km of new duplicated rail line between South Morang station and Mernda:
  • Five grade separations: and
  • New stations at Mernda, Marymede and Hawkstowe.

Chief Executive Officer, Joe Barr, said the extension would cater for the significant population growth in Melbourne’s north.

“We’re proud to be able to provide the community with a solution that will reduce travel time and improve liveability in the local area with better connections, as well as creating hundreds of jobs,” Mr Barr said.

Regional General Manager VIC/TAS/SA/NZ, Trevor Hall, said John Holland was excited to continue its partnership with the Level Crossing Removal Authority.

“We have successfully removed several level crossings on behalf of the Victorian Government, including most recently at North, Mckinnon and Centre Roads. I am proud that these have all been delivered significantly ahead of time, and I’m sure our working relationship will continue to thrive,” Mr Hall said.

Construction is scheduled to commence in the coming months and take approximately two years to complete.
